{"id":20,"date":"2011-03-14T04:13:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-14T04:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/specksweb.com\/sandpapershoes\/?p=20"},"modified":"2013-12-23T00:54:58","modified_gmt":"2013-12-23T00:54:58","slug":"enchanted-rock-er-cascade-caverns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/specksweb.com\/sandpapershoes\/?p=20","title":{"rendered":"Enchanted Rock&#8230; er&#8230; Cascade Caverns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So from Llano we drove to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpwd.state.tx.us\/spdest\/findadest\/parks\/enchanted_rock\/\">Enchanted Rock<\/a>.\u00a0 And they were packed.\u00a0 We detoured toward home and stopped at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cascadecaverns.com\/\">Cascade Caverns<\/a> (near Boerne).<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cascadecaverns.com\/\">Cascade Caverns<\/a> reminded me of a roadside attraction.\u00a0 The kind that&#8217;s advertised with billboards on the highway: &#8220;Only 2 More Miles Until&#8230; THE THING!&#8221;\u00a0 There&#8217;s a ramshackle gift shop, large campground, big fiberglass T-Rex (that appears in the Patrick Swayze film, <i>Father Hood<\/i>), and a limestone cave.\u00a0 That being said, Cascade Caverns was better than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>The tour is 1 hour (and $11) and covers about a quarter mile.\u00a0 The cave is so small that you are much closer to the features than you are at other cave tours.\u00a0 And the cave does have many modest features.\u00a0 It claims to the &#8220;wettest&#8221; cave in Texas, which means that there are active formations.\u00a0 Plenty of &#8220;soda straws,&#8221; a waterfall in the final (and large) room (which is dry due to the current Texas drought), and a few examples of &#8220;cave bacon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of Mastodon fossils in the cave, and we got a very close-up look at a hibernating bat (tiny little guy about the size of your thumb).<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-lagKEXsH134\/TX2V6-TRM2I\/AAAAAAAAAbc\/RLm4Pm4-IKc\/s1600\/Cascade+Caverns.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-lagKEXsH134\/TX2V6-TRM2I\/AAAAAAAAAbc\/RLm4Pm4-IKc\/s640\/Cascade+Caverns.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So from Llano we drove to Enchanted Rock.\u00a0 And they were packed.\u00a0 We detoured toward home and stopped at Cascade Caverns (near Boerne).
